Amazing Day #11: Money talks

I love Tuesday nights.
That's when we volunteer at a conversational English "class" for International students.
Last night's topic:  Money talks

We talked about lots of different angles surrounding the topic of money and wealth and power and happiness.  And necessities and luxuries.  And choosing how to make money and how to use it.

'Twas a good time.  Some fun and laughter and even some sadness.  Some agreement as well as disagreement.

At the end of the evening we were each given a chance to say what we might do with a million dollars.  Some of the answers were fun or funny, and many were predictable.  Several were wise.

And one was awesome.

When it was his turn a student from the other side of the world explained what a million American dollars would translate to in his country and then described his dream to build a school there. It took only a few seconds to realize that this was not some pie-in-the-sky dream of "what I would love to do if I win the lottery" - but that instead this is exactly his plan for his life.  This is in fact why he is here in America - to take the next steps to make this dream happen.

Turns out that he has already been a teacher back home and he obviously knows what he's talking about.  He has carefully thought through his ideas - and the rest of us sat staring at him in amazement.  We broke into applause a couple times and some of us may or may not have shed some tears.

What an amazing moment!
What an amazing guy!

Oh, yah, a few of us changed our answers.
We decided if we got a million bucks we would invest in his school!!!
