Happy Juneteenth! I'm sorry I'm late.

Less than 10 years ago I first heard of Juneteenth and have been trying to learn more about it since.  Because I feel such a huge gap in my education, I can identify with this guy.

Yes, fact checkers have found this guy in Ohio, who told them,

"I hope it lets people know that it's OK

to change your opinion

when you're presented with new evidence

that clearly shows you were wrong.”

Today a Facebook friend posted these lines - and gave me permission to share.  Thank you, Ryan DjRhino Flemming.

On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and read General Order No. 3, announcing and enforcing the freedom of enslaved people in Texas.
While President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier on January 1, 1863, its enforcement depended upon the presence of Union troops. As Union forces advanced into formerly Confederate territory, freedom was not only proclaimed—it was secured. For many enslaved people in Texas, that moment finally arrived on June 19, 1865.
For those who had lived under the bondage of slavery, this was a day of profound joy and significance. In the years that followed, they commemorated the occasion as “Juneteenth,” and over time that celebration spread throughout the nation.
Nearly every major movement has a defining moment that comes to symbolize the larger story. Juneteenth has become such a moment in the story of slavery’s end in the United States. It represents the day when the promise that all people are created equal moved closer to becoming a reality for all Americans.
We remember Juneteenth not to celebrate the fact that slavery once existed in our nation, but to celebrate that it was brought to an end. We honor those who endured its cruelty, those who fought against it, and those who sacrificed to secure freedom for others. We also celebrate the truth that every person is created in the image of God and is therefore worthy of dignity, justice, and respect.
Happy Juneteenth!

Sirens, neighbors, and bad news

Sirens can trigger memories for me... of that day back in 1996...

I wrote these lines in my book, Beyond These Walls; where you can find them starting on p. 125.

...

A group of best friends were gathered in a living room when we heard a siren approaching on the highway… and then sudden silence...

That was strange.

What does it mean?

It was so unusual that we stepped outside to get a better look.

The ambulance had turned down the almost-deserted dead-end dirt road - which explained why the siren was no longer needed.

But why would they be going down there?

Hardly anyone lived on that road.

We heard ourselves talking about what it means to love my neighbor as myself.

We remembered how a mutual friend liked to stir up that topic to make us all think.

You know how if you are coming home and see smoke billowing from your neighborhood…?

The panic... the fear… and then the relief when you discover it’s not your house.

Whew!

But wait; it’s my neighbor’s house…

Hmmm…

This is tricky.

Worth pondering

Back to the mystery of the ambulance on the dead-end road…

Within a short time we would discover that the neighbor with the emergency was my own dear dad who had been planting beans in the huge field at the end of that road.

And now he was gone.

Suddenly.

My last day to be 75

Well, this is fun.

Just found a little piece I had written on this date in 2010.

A moment when I chose to celebrate my last day of being 59.

Today I pause to remember that time.

To remember that we were in the middle of some hard times on that day.

Times when I wondered where I belonged.

Places where I no longer felt welcome.

That was a most unusual feeling for me.

For nearly all of my life I had felt at home and welcome in my world. It had been a good life for the first 50+ years, but that decade had brought some rough news and difficult discoveries and had messed with my sense of belonging.

However... as I read those lines today I can see that I was choosing to focus on the positive, to celebrate the good parts of that moment.

Little did I know when I wrote and posted that bit of celebration how things might change! Yet that coming summer things began to pivot rather surprisingly. Turns out that my 60’s became a decade of adventure and some crazy changes.

Adventures indeed!  During those next few years we lived on four different islands for short periods. We were “home-free” for awhile and lived in a 28-foot RV for two of those years.

And now we have settled in again… in a new place where I feel welcome… even though it is so different than what used to feel like home to me.

What an amazing journey and what a surprising landing.

What joy to once again be welcomed and to find a sense of belonging.

I am really glad that I bumped into that little bit of writing today.

I had barely begun writing just a few short months earlier.

On that day I had no clue what I might soon be writing about.

Sure enough.

I kept building that writing habit.

I kept trying to capture the adventures as they happened.

During those early writing days I wondered if I dared call myself a writer.

Eventually I decided that I could… IF I was writing.

So I did.

I kept writing and even published a book - about that next decade.

I have continued writing into my 70s.

I wrote another book - this one about my spiritual journey.

As I pause again on this last day of being 75, I continue to be amazed.

And yes, I realize that I can only imagine the adventures ahead.

An unexpected Earth Day gift

(Reprinted from Earth Day 2021)

I'm celebrating Earth Day with flowers...

inside my house...

thanks to my wonderful neighbors!

I love flowers in my house, but I hesitate to cut them because then I wouldn't be able to see them growing outside my window.

But my dear neighbor brought me some a couple days ago because her mom had the bright idea that "we might as well take them inside to enjoy rather than letting them freeze."

So thanks, you guys.

My house is now full of flowers because you inspired me to go out and cut some of my own to go with the ones you gave me.

And that is my rambling Earth Day story...
