The gift of calm

Dear friend,

I’m thinking of you today and decided to tell you so.
Your friendship has been one of the riches of my life.
You have been good to me but also good for me.
I have learned much from you.

One thing that stands out to me is your calm.
Yes, I know that “calm” is usually an adjective, but it can also be a noun. I checked.
  • Freedom from motion or disturbance
  • Stillness
  • Freedom from agitation
  • Tranquility
  • Serenity

I need calm. We all do.
Much of what I have learned and am learning about serenity comes from your example.

I am so grateful.

Conversation. Actual conversation

Sometimes I get scared.
Scared about our country.
Scared for our world.
For our planet.

Like when I hear so much anger and vitriol.
Name-calling, accusations and all kinds of nastiness.
So much violence and strife and destruction.
Sometimes it’s all I can do to stay calm.
To slowly walk away.
To take in a deep breath - and then another.
To find something else to occupy my thoughts.

...

Other times I am privy to conversations between people who disagree with each but who do so calmly and respectfully.
What a novel idea.
I’m talking real conversation; you know?
Not interrupting each other.
No name-calling.
No getting mad and yelling.
No judging of motives.
Conversation that doesn't get shut down by anger.
Where people actually listen to the other.
Real dialog between mature responsible people.
Calm, reasonable, civil.
Ah, yes.

At those times I am so terribly grateful for good friends.
And for friends of friends.
For friends who cultivate respectful friendships.
Wise friends. Mature friends. Thinking friends.

And then I feel better.
About my world.
About our world.

Accountability - the helpful kind

Sometimes I need accountability.
The good kind.
The supportive kind.
The kind that actually helps me reach my goals.
The kind that encourages me to be a better person.

I desperately need that kind of encouragement.
I have known I need it for a long time; therefore I have often sought accountability.

“Only the wise seek accountability.”
(Somebody said that once.)

But not every version of accountability is helpful.
Some accountability settings are downright harmful.
Toxic.
Damaging.

I do NOT need that kind.
  • There is the kind that you can lie your way out of.  I mean, come on; how honest are you going to be with the person who is supposed to keep you on the straight and narrow?
  • There is the kind that easily devolves into ineffective nagging. Example: one spouse holding the other accountable in their struggle with over-eating - or cheating or some other bad habit.
  • There is the kind that encourages you to be honest and then punishes you when you are.
  • There is the kind that assumes that some magic formula will solve every problem.
  • There is the kind that just lets you slide with no real follow-through from either side.

Nope, I don’t need any of those.
They are not healthy and they are not helpful.

But I do need the kind where my connection becomes a motivator and where it results in actual growth or improvement.
  • I need the kind where I receive encouragement.
  • Where I find a listening ear.
  • Where someone offers real solutions.
  • Where people care enough to offer a pat on the back or a kick in the pants.
  • I need a place where I am encouraged to be honest - with my friends and with myself.
  • And a place where my honesty doesn’t mean that I will be abandoned.

…

I have been fortunate enough to find that kind of helpful support in a few places.
Like my on-line writers’ group.
Like the little chat room of like-minded strugglers.
Like a certain friend who sees the good in me even when I can’t.
Like another friend who always seems to be able to offer fresh perspective.
Like the dear friend who tells me not to be afraid.
Like the one who reminds me to rise above the self-pity.

When I go to these people to report success, they rejoice with me.
When I get stuck, someone may offer an idea that gets me un-stuck.
When I’m discouraged, I hear words that lift and inspire me.

And here’s a bonus!
I’ve discovered a benefit that has almost surprised me.

This morning, for example, I was about to head to my writing group page or my un-cluttering group to whine about how discouraged I was about my latest failure. Surely I would find sympathy - or maybe something helpful.

But…

Instead I stopped myself and decided it would be cooler to go and pick off one of my goals SO THAT I could report that to my group.

And it worked!

Just thinking about checking in gave me the motivation I needed to actually get something done. It became the kick I needed.

Funny how that works!
Funny and wonderful.

Brave New Beat

It might be time to hear these words again...

.....................

I made friends with fear
We went everywhere together
He pulled out my chair
when I sat down at the table
I told him everything
just to get his opinion
He spoke so confidently
because I always believed him
He kept me from doin' anything
too risky or brave
In exchange for his protection
I became his slave

I made friends with hate
I hated everything about him
But I was so wounded by love
I tho't I couldn't live without him
He kept track of every little grudge
so it wouldn't heal
He helped me hold and preserve
all the pain I feel

I'm leavin' this sad city
Sorry, my old friends
but you can't go with me
I made friends with love and mercy
Ooh... and they're such good dancers
So don't call me anymore...
I'm not gonna' answer

I'm gonna' tango with my new friends
I'm gonna' tango with my new self
I'm gonna' tango with my new feet
I'm dancin' to the rhythm
of a brave new beat

..............

Life on the road - or not

Four months.
That’s how long we’ve been here in our new home.
This home without wheels.
From the RV into an apartment.

It was a big move.
A major shift in direction for us.
A change of venue - of a different sort.

Yes, we had discovered that we do indeed enjoy living on the road but it felt like it was time to put down roots again at least for awhile. To be able to get involved in long-term activities. To live without major deadlines every month.

Downsizing
This was a big move in another way - because it involves a big project.
One of our major reasons to settle down for a bit is so that we can “finish” at least Phase One of our downsizing.
Yes, we had already moved out of the big house and had lived in tiny quarters for awhile. But… we had not really finished the sorting and pitching.  Ran out of time… or energy or motivation or focus or whatever. Consequently too many books and papers and keepsakes were still in bins and boxes which had to be moved from one storage shed to another. So this is the time for that. To finish that process.  That huge job that is almost done.

We did succeed in emptying out the storage unit less than a month after moving in to our apartment, but there are still things piled in corners and closets awaiting our sorting. AND there are still 15-20 boxes in our utility trailer. Gradually we are dealing with one box and then another. Things have been taken to Goodwill and to the dumpster. The shredder is kept consistently busy. Empty boxes have been passed off to people who need them. Much has been done but there is still much to do.

Kid care
We picked this location to be near two of the grands and close enough to the third to get there when needed. We are delighted to be able to see them all fairly often and to be able to give their moms a break now and then.

Cousin time is so fun and I'm thrilled to be able to join in the adventures!
Occupation
I never seem to find enough time to do all that I wish to do. We both have several projects occupying our time and our creative efforts. After investing many months to music last year, hubby’s focus is on photography and art this year - even involving grandkids in one big project.

I am getting more serious than ever about my writing. I am enrolled in online courses, have discovered a writing group in the next town and am vigorously editing one of my NaNoWriMo projects that I wrote several years ago.

Living life - and loving life
After four months, we love it here and often talk that we might end up here for a long time. That we might enjoy having a home base. Our little town offers pretty much every fast food franchise known to man as well as several other eateries that we’ve barely begun to try. It is great fun being so close to a metropolitan area. One of our favorite places is the wonderful Flint Farmers’ Market - where we hope to begin spending more time.

Travel?
This settling in does not mean that we are done traveling. In fact, it kinda’ gives us more travel options.  Many spots across Michigan are accessible as day trips. Now that we have a little red car, we are planning to take lots of road trips. In fact, we just did - to New England to celebrate our 45th anniversary. And we still have our RV parked in our daughter’s yard where it provides a home away from home when we visit her. We will hitch that up occasionally for camping trips - like when we visit our friends working at the Big Sable Lighthouse north of Ludington in a few weeks.

...

So I guess you could say we’ve turned a corner.
Changed direction a bit in our wanderings.
So far we love this new trajectory.
